Where to Eat...

Breakfast

Dragonfly Cafe is terrific. Casual, with lots of healthy options. A great place to fuel up before an active day.

Lunch

Pita Jungle has outstanding value. Great service, and the fattoush salad is unbelievable.

Dinner

For authentic, no-frills local color, check out Greasewood Flats. It's a burger joint with outdoor picnic-table seating and live music on the weekends.

What to Do...

Morning

Take an early morning hike up Pinnacle Peak. The wide, well-maintained trail works for most levels of hiker, yet it's still a great, hilly workout with beautiful cactus views.

Afternoon

Take a tour of Taliesin West. Built by Frank Lloyd Wright as the winter home for his architecture school, it is both beautiful and architecturally fascinating. With tours for all levels of interest, Taliesen West gives you insight into Frank Lloyd Wright and his philosophies, as well as insight into how to build sustainably, using natural local materials and creating structures that fit neatly into your surroundings.

Evening

Before dinner, take one of Alex Austin's classes at At One Yoga--he's outstanding. Shower, then head out to Greasewood Flats for dinner and entertainment--live music on the weekends with a no-pretenses, come-as-you-are feel.

Comments

Scottsdale gets a bum rap for being "the land of 1000 strip malls," but it has something for everyone if you know where to look. Great bargain shopping in nearby Phoenix (check out Last Chance), beautiful desert views and hikes, and perfect weather except for the very worst heat of summer. Also excellent food at all price ranges, from super-cheap to very upscale, with surprising ethnic diversity.
